What is EMF (Electromagnetic Field)?
Many would argue that one of the greatest technological advancements of our era has been wireless internet and with it, the ability to use devices such as tablets, cell phones, and laptops to connect to the internet on-the-go. While there’s no doubt that wireless technology has opened up a more convenient lifestyle than previous generations could ever dream of, sadly it isn’t without ramifications.
You see, this type of technology emits electromagnetic fields, also known as EMF. EMF is nothing new – it’s in almost everything around us – but as technology progresses, the frequency that is being used to carry data and signals is more powerful in shorter wavelengths. And while this might sound great from a technological standpoint, the news from a health perspective is anything but.
The electric and magnetic forces in EMFs are caused by electromagnetic radiation, something scientists and medical professionals have been concerned about for decades now. With side effects such as insomnia, headaches, nausea, and reduced sperm count in males, as well as fatal conditions such as brain cancer and leukemia linked to EMF exposure, this certainly isn’t a topic you should shy away from.
In this article, we’re going to explore everything you need to know about EMF, including how it works, the scientifically proven dangers of it, how it affects a child’s development, and most importantly, how you can protect yourself and your family against EMF radiation. As cities are now beginning to force 5G upon its inhabitants, there’s never been a more vital time to educate yourself about this topic.
How Do Electromagnetic Fields Work?
Every electronic device we own emits some kind of radiation, whether it be magnetic, electric, or radio frequency zone. Together these types of radiation are called electromagnetic (EMF) radiation.
In terms of how electromagnetic fields work in relation to the human body, the World Health Organization sums it up best:
“Low-frequency electric fields influence the human body just as they influence any other material made up of charged particles. When electric fields act on conductive materials, they influence the distribution of electric charges at their surface. They cause current to flow through the body to the ground.
Low-frequency magnetic fields induce circulating currents within the human body. The strength of these currents depends on the intensity of the outside magnetic field. If sufficiently large, these currents could cause stimulation of nerves and muscles or affect other biological processes.”
How Are you Exposed to EMF Radiation?
Environmental Analyst in Medical Intelligence, Breanne Gibson, explains that we are being exposed to EMF and WiFi from many different devices on a daily basis, including:
- cell phones
- cell phone towers
- cordless phones
- kitchen appliances
- Bluetooth headsets or any Bluetooth device
- WI-FI routers
- airport full body scanner
- baby monitors
- anything internet related
It would be almost impossible to find someone not in regular contact with the sources of EMF radiation above - especially when Pew Research reports that virtually all Americans (over 95%) currently own a cell phone. Alarmingly, since 2011, more people worldwide own cell phones than toothbrushes…
Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome: Signs and Symptoms
In their article on EMF, the World Health Organization (WHO) explained: “During the 20th century, environmental exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields has been steadily increasing as growing electricity demand, ever-advancing technologies and changes in social behaviour have created more and more artificial sources. Everyone is exposed to a complex mix of weak electric and magnetic fields, both at home and at work, from the generation and transmission of electricity, domestic appliances and industrial equipment, to telecommunications and broadcasting”.
While some of us might go about our daily life seemingly unaffected by this exposure, experts interviewed in the Israeli documentary, ‘How We Are Killing Ourselves - Wireless Radiation’, estimate that a whopping 50% of the population may experience Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome (EHS), with symptoms ranging from mild to severe.
Those suffering from Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome (EHS) report a wide range of health problems that they attribute to low-level exposure of electromagnetic fields, including headaches, body pain, lethargy, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), nausea, burning sensation, heart arrhythmia and anxiety.
Interestingly, reports of EHS are anything but new. In 1970, a report from the former Soviet Union described "microwave syndrome" among military personnel, working with radio and radar equipment, who showed symptoms that included fatigue, dizziness, headaches, problems with concentration and memory, and sleep disturbances. Similar symptoms were found in the 1980s among Swedes working in front of cathode ray tube monitors, while the same symptoms are reported in Finns, with electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) being attributed to exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF), as stated in this study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information.
The Scientifically Proven Dangers of EMF
Radiation from other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as ultraviolet light and gamma rays, are known to cause significant harm in some circumstances, however some still deny the detrimental health effects low-frequency EMF devices can have on humans.
With EMF emitting technology growing at an alarmingly fast rate, many within the health and science industries are now trying to fill the gaps in research on this topic. What most of the population might not realize is that there have been hundreds, if not thousands of research papers reporting the scientifically proven health dangers of EMF – it’s just that, perhaps, no one is willing to bring these findings to the attention of the masses.
This 2015 Polish study admitted “The intensity of electromagnetic radiation in human environment is increasing and currently reaches astronomical levels that had never before experienced on our planet. The most influential process of EMF impact on living organisms, is its direct tissue penetration. The current established standards of exposure to EMFs in Poland and in the rest of the world are based on the thermal effect. It is well known that weak EMF could cause all sorts of dramatic non-thermal effects in body cells, tissues and organs.”
Other scientific studies over the past few years have found enough evidence to link human exposure to EMF to conditions such as depression, leukemia, several types of cancer, significantly higher rates of miscarriage, an increase in sperm DNA fragmentation, changes in human nerve function, and more.
EMF and Children’s’ Development
While the evidence for the detrimental effects of EMF on adults is alarming, sadly, it gets worse for children. A 2012 study found that when EMF are considered, a child's head's absorption can be over two times greater, and absorption of the skull's bone marrow can be ten times greater than adults.
In this video, cancer researcher Dr. Anthony Miller explains that all independent research shows increased brain cancer (malignant gliomas) after ten years of heavy cell phone use. It’s important to note that “heavy cell phone use” was defined as just 30 minutes a day. He also states people who started their cell use as teens had up to 8 times the cancer risk.
Scientists have found that the body reacts to wireless exposure by showing signs of increased oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can increase our risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, gene mutations and cancers, heart disorders, and inflammatory diseases.
According to Parents for Safe Technology, research has also shown autoimmune responses, blood serum changes, alterations of immune cells, impaired immune function and the presence of biological markers for inflammation after wireless exposure.
With irrefutable findings such as this, numerous countries around the world are now taking strong action to reduce wireless radiation on children, who are more susceptible to these harmful effects of EMF. Countries like Switzerland, Italy, France, Austria, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Israel, Russia and China have set RF exposure limits 100 to 10,000 times less than the USA. Additionally, Israel has already banned WiFi for preschool through 2nd grade, while France has ruled that WiFi be banned from nursery schools and must be turned off in elementary schools when not in use. You can view an extensive list of each country’s actions against EMF exposure here.
How to Protect You and Your Family Against EMF
Shining a light on EMF and its dangers can strike fear into anyone’s heart – especially a parent’s – but thankfully, help is at hand. There are a number of tried-and-tested products available on the market to protect you and your family from electromagnetic fields, therefore helping to prevent the harmful effects of EMF.
EMF Protection Devices
EMF protection devices come in many different forms, but their main purpose is to limit the amount of EMF radiation that can pass through them. They are made of certain materials that are effective in reducing radiation, such as steel, aluminium, and other metals. You can also buy EMF radiation paint, acting as a larger protective barrier for your home or workplace.
Some of the most popular and effective EMF protection devices sold online include laptop shields, (ranging from carry cases to lap trays), cell phone shields, and smart meter shields. These target the products we all tend to use most in our day-to-day lives, particularly those that may be placed on or very close to our bodies for hours at a time.
EMF Protection Fabric
Fabric that aims to shield the user from EMF radiation is also becoming increasingly popular, with products such as bed canopies, curtains, floor rugs, and clothing being used by high performance athletes, as well as business executives who are concerned about their increased exposure to EMF whilst in the workplace. These fabrics often contain metals to aid with EMF blockage and reduction.
EMF Protection for Children
As we mentioned earlier, children are particularly susceptible to EMF radiation when compared to adults. To help protect them, you should ensure that all wireless devices they use have some sort of a shield, whether it’s a microchip, case, cover, or tray.
There are also plenty of products aimed at both newborns and unborn babies, including an EMF protective blanket that can be placed over the mother’s tummy when she is using EMF-emitting products or as a blanket to be placed in the crib. These blankets are made from a tight silver woven fabric that claims to block 99.99% of radiation from passing through. They are usually then covered with a soft cotton.
EMF Academy also recommends using a wired baby monitor if possible, as the wireless versions emit far more radiation. Try to place any monitor as far away from your baby as is reasonable i.e. at least 6 feet.
When it comes to using EMF protection devices, fabric, or other products, we recommend that you buy your own EMF meter, as this will allow you to actually test any EMF protection device you use. Check out our Top 10 EMF Meters Reviewed in 2019.
Other Alternatives to Reduce EMF Radiation in Your Surroundings
Along with utilizing the products discussed above, there are also some other simple ways that you can minimize the EMF radiation in your surroundings.
Don’t carry your phone on your body: Next time you go to put your phone in your pocket or elsewhere on your body, stop to think: do I really need to be carrying my phone with me right now? If the answer is yes, try placing it in a bag that you can carry, as this can create additional distance between your body and your cell phone (although, not by much). Sadly, there has been hundreds of studies showing the impact of EMF on fertility, sperm count, breast cancer, and women and men's health due to cell phones being carried on or near parts of the body.
Keep all wireless devices out of the kitchen and bedroom: These are the two most frequented areas of your home, so one of the best ways to reduce your exposure to harmful EMF is to keep both areas as a wireless device-free zone, if possible.
Put your cell phone into airplane mode: If you really must have your phone in your bedroom at night (or close to you during the day), then it’s helpful to change it into airplane mode when it’s not actively being used. Turning off the wireless signal will prevent it from being emitted constantly, especially near your brain during the night as you sleep.
Turn off your WiFi router during the night: Let’s face it, you’re not using the internet while you sleep (or at least, you shouldn’t be!), so why not just turn off your wireless internet router altogether? If your cell phone requires it to update apps, it can do so during the day.
Don’t hold your cell phone to your ear: The reports of regular cell phone placement to the ear and brain tumours on that side of the head are devastating and not something anyone should ignore. Whether you talk on your phone a few times each week, or several times per day, it is recommended that you hold the cell phone away from your head and use the speakerphone function when possible.
Take beneficial supplements: According to leading holistic nutritionist Breanne Gibson, spices rich in phenolics, including cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, cloves, and rosemary are showing in research to help protect and repair damage from EMF, thanks to their protective capacity against peroxynitrites. Additionally, magnesium is a natural calcium channel blocker, helping to reduce the effects of EMF on your voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs).
Get rid of your microwave: For those who are particularly worried about EMF radiation, they find that eradicating one of the most dangerous household sources of EMF radiation – the microwave – to ease their anxiety. While a microwave is the most convenient way to heat up your food, you can switch to only using the stovetop or conventional oven.
You only need to look at the research collected so far to realize exposure to EMF is having detrimental effects on our health, ranging from debilitating conditions such as headaches, insomnia, and nausea, to life threatening illnesses such as cancer. While electromagnetic fields have been present in our environment for decades, it’s the most recent development of 5G that has scientists and health professionals extremely concerned.
5G contains a frequency being used to carry data and signals in more powerful and shorter wavelengths than ever before, resulting in an even greater risk of the harmful effects discussed in this article.
Modern life is also seeing EMF emitting gadgets such as tablets and smart phones being thrust into the hands of toddlers without a second thought of exactly how this is, or later will, harm their health and development. Remember, your government and large technology corporations may not be revealing everything you need to know. You must be vigilant and undertake your own research on the impact of EMF radiation so you can make informed decisions regarding your own wellbeing.
While technology remains an important and constantly evolving aspect of our lives, you can take action. Safeguard yourself and your loved ones with EMF protection devices, utilize an EMF meter around your home or workspace, and take simple steps towards reducing your exposure to EMF radiation by spending more time in nature instead.
